Another Casualty In The War Against Anti-War Movies

The new film “Stop-Loss” about a soldier who tries to stop his battalion from going back to Iraq is making entertainment news among the right side of the blogosphere. But not because it’s making any money.

No, it’s because the right side of the blogosphere predicted that the film would be a money loser. And they were right.

This past weekend, the film, starring Ryan Phillipe, made $4.5 million over the weekend. But why did MTV Films greenlight this film? Although it got decent reviews, it still managed to underperform to expectations.

The typical liberal thinking at this point says that people want to escape from reality, and with the war still going on, people “aren’t ready” for these films yet.

Then there’s the theory I subscribe to – the reason these films have not done so well at the box office is because they are anti-American. They portray the troops as monsters who are turned that way by the government. And people don’t want to see that.

But they keep producing the films, hoping that at least one of them will make money. One of the excuses they use is that they have to think of the global market when making these films, and that the rest of the world hates America enough to go see them.

Um, no. Libertas, the Liberty Film Festival’s blog, points out that overseas, the anti-Americanism isn’t playing, either. Except for the Tom Cruise film “Lions for Lambs,” which had a respectable number, most of these films did not do well in other lands. In fact, three films that did incredibly well overseas – “National Treasure” and its sequel “Book of Secrets,” along with “Transformers” – all did very well in the foreign market. And all three films are pro-American films.

For more proof of this, the film “Vantage Point,” again a pro-American film, has already made $61 million overseas in the past six weeks.

I think a lot of these studios are deluded on their thinking because of the success of “Fahrenheit 9/11,” a very anti-American film that did do well at the box office. But even that film had to fight some controversy on its release, despite the revenues. Most people went because they either wanted something to complain about, or because they wanted their own opinions affirmed. So the film basically was preaching to the choir.

Bottom line, people are more conservative than what Hollywood takes them for. The evidence is in the box office.

Obama Throws Himself Under the Racial Bus

Obama opened up a can of worms that has, unfortunately for him, worked against him.

Last week, in a speech he gave to respond to his association with Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama heaped praise upon the preacher, saying, “I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can disown my white grandmother.”

That last remark…well, turned a few heads on the right side of the blogosphere last week.

But before we get to that, let’s get to why he was trying to apologize for his association with Wright. He was being criticized because of the fact that Wright had said some things in the past that could be either considered racist or anti-American. It’s been reported already what he said, so I won’t repeat it here. But what Obama’s speech ended up doing was not bringing people together, but tearing them apart.

In the aftermath of the speech, the mainstream media praised Obama up and down for being a unifier. Those on the right side of the aisle saw the speech as very divisive. What was meant to start a conversation on race has only started a conversation on how much the blacks hate whitey.

Some bloggers started to question whether there really would be a serious conversation on race after this. The only thing it has really done is gave the MSM a reason yet again to praise Obama.

But luckily, the average person isn’t going for it. Glenn Reynolds at InstaPundit.com reported that the conversation isn’t turning into what can we do to reach out to each other, but what is really said amongst blacks in their own communities and in the black churches. The average person in Philadelphia, soon after the speech was made, felt it played too much to the elite and that Obama should have disowned his pastor.

But what really got a lot of hackles up was the comment about his white grandmother, who helped to raise him. On a sports radio show, Obama called his grandmother a “typical white person” for being afraid of strangers. I’m sure she was thrilled to hear that. Michelle Malkin, Allahpundit at Hot Air, Ann Coulter, and many other commentators and bloggers have expressed their disgust at the idea that he would throw his own grandmother under the bus for political gain.

The national conversation isn’t going to happen, despite what the mainstream media thinks. The only thing the speech did for this country was open old wounds and just show how racist some in the black community really are.

The Hooker Culture

Why is the media paying so much attention to Ashley Alexandra Dupre, a woman destined to be in a long line of women who are famous just for being famous? Scratch that. She is famous because she got paid to have sex with a big time politician.

If the media didn't go digging for who "Kristen" was on a now infamous tape, describing "Client 9" and an encounter between the two, would we really care who this woman was and how she brought down former governor Eliot Spitzer? Would we even care about her background?

And what kind of message is this sending to our young women?

With more and more offers being made to Dupre in the hours following the release of the tape and her identity being revealed, it would look like any young woman can make a quick buck selling their bodies to the highest bidder. If you hook up with a celebrity or a big wig, great. Everyone will be clamoring for your attention and offering you all kinds of money -- to basically do the same thing you were caught doing before.

It's been talked about before that we now live in a culture where young women see sex as "freedom." Joe Francis has made a living presenting women as willing to do anything in his "Girls Gone Wild" series of DVDs, where women flashed or had sex on camera just for a t-shirt or baseball cap. Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera made careers out of their sexy images when they were in their teens. One of the top dolls on the market is the Bratz dolls, featuring teen girls dressed somewhat provocatively and promoting the idea that the only things that matter are makeup and fashion. There's no denying that sex sells. But do we really need to have it saturated into our culture so much that it's all our young women see?

And what does this tell our young men? That all women are whores, you just have to negotiate the price.

With this newest political scandal, it's only gone to promote the idea even more. Dupre is destined to make a ton of money off of this. Penthouse has offered her money to pose nude. Francis was about to offer her $1 million before he found out he already had footage of her in the archives from about 4 years ago. An aspiring singer, her songs that were on her MySpace page are being played on radio stations. And she was able to do all of this because she got paid to have sex.
